Back pain is one of the most common physical ailments. Studies in the US show that eight out of 10 people there have back pain at some point in their lives, usually in the lower back. Maybe you sprained it in the yard or while cleaning the house. Or you may have a chronic sports injury or a chronic condition, such as arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis that causes back pain. Back pain is the most common cause of concern in adults as well as adolescents. This can be uncomfortable and interfere with daily activities. It can occur as a result of prolonged sitting, poor posture, lifting heavy weights without precaution, or injury. Age is also an important factor. Back pain occurs with age due to the weakening of the back or degenerative discs. Back pain itself can be a problem or a symptom of some other disease. Identifying the pain is important for its treatment. Most people are troubled by back pain. There can be many causes of back pain. Especially our daily routine can be an important reason for this. Many people do not take back pain seriously, due to which they have to suffer many losses. While 80% of people experience back pain at least once in their lifetime, the good news is that 95% of them get better. However, keeping back pain at bay requires good health, proper weight, correct posture, and adequate exercise. Medication and physiotherapy can provide relief in most cases of back pain.
Wilson Ray, MD, chief of spine surgery for the department of neurological surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, says that home remedies “are better when combined with them than [when done] alone.”
When low back pain persists and continues to interfere with your quality of life, several treatment options may be needed for adequate relief.
When to take back pain seriously and seek expert opinion:

What can be the cause of lower back pain?
- Lumbar Radiculopathy: Lumbar radiculopathy is nerve irritation that occurs due to damage to the discs between the vertebrae. Back pain is usually aggravated by movement of the waist and may be aggravated by coughing or sneezing. In more severe cases, sciatica may be accompanied by bladder and/or intestinal incontinence. The sciatica of lumbar radiculopathy usually affects only one side of the body, such as the left or right side, and not both.
- Bony encroachment: Any condition that results in movement or enlargement of the vertebrae of the lumbar spine can limit space (encroachment) for adjacent spinal cord and nerves. - Lumbar strain (acute, chronic): Lumbar strain is an injury to the ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles of the lower back. The phenomenon of stretching results in the release of microscopic tears of varying degrees in these tissues. Lumbar strain is considered one of the most common causes of low back pain. The diagnosis of lumbar strain is based on the history of the injury, the location of the pain, and the exclusion of nervous system injury. Usually, X-ray testing is only helpful in ruling out bone abnormalities.
- Bone and joint conditions: Bone and joint conditions that cause low back pain include those present from birth (congenital), those that result from wear and tear (degenerative) or injury, and those that cause inflammation of the joints. (arthritis) can be caused.
- Degenerative bone and joint conditions: As we get older, the amount of water and protein in the body’s cartilage changes. This change results in weaker, thinner, and more fragile cartilage. Examples of spondyloarthropathies include the arthritis of reactive arthritis (Reiter’s disease), ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Each of these diseases can cause low back pain and stiffness, which is usually worse in the morning.
